I had been thinking for some time now that I needed to start watching MMA again, and since I didn’t have to cover anything for the news today, I watched UFC Vegas 57 and enjoyed it.
I only watched the main card, well, I didn’t get up early enough for the prelims, but it has reignited my love for the combat sport. Some of you who have followed this blog know a bit of my back story, and if you don’t, I will fill you in.
In the late 2000s, I quit football and took up Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I had become very passionate about all things grappling and MMA. Injury kept me training for a few weeks, and while I was on the shelf I decided to start blogging about it and the a new dream came from that.
After a while, I started writing for MMA websites and covering events. I even got to cover UFC on FX in 2012. It was after this event I decided to go to university and get a degree. I thought that once I got the degree I would be travelling the world covering events, but life kind of got in the way.
10 years after moving to Canberra to get that degree, I am now in Broken Hill and working as journalist for 7 Spencer Gulf News, and I thought that now might be a good time to start covering events again.
Ok enough about me, onto the fights. I was enjoyed the main card. Since I hadn’t been following MMA like I had used to, I there was only one fighter that I really new, and that was Neil Magny. Unfortunately for Magny, he lost to Shavket Rahkmonov who was just relentless on the ground. I thought Magny may have got him with a heel hook, but it wasn’t to be.
As much as I enjoyed the whole main card, two fights for me stood out. The first one was Josh Parisian vs Alan Baudot. There is nothing better than watching two Heavyweight’s go at it like they did. I loved the Spining backfist’s that both fighter’s attempted. Paisan deserved the win.
I was impressed with both fighters, especially at how they kept a fast pace for five rounds. I am excite to follow both fighters careers.
Well, I’m looking forward to getting back into MMA and writing about it, I may go back to what I used to do and posting main card predictions/previews for UFC 276.
