It took two minutes and four seconds for Jon ‘Bones’ Jones to become the world’s Undisputed (cough, cough) Heavyweight.
Even though he had a three-year layoff and was going up a weight class, Jones made it look so easy. Some fighters get ring rust and need to stay active, and Conor McGregor is a better fighter the more involved he is.
Jones immediately imposed his will; he controlled the Octagon and made Gane pay. Now that he is back and has moved up a weight, the Heavyweight division is fun and exciting. Straight after the win, he called out former Champion Stipe Miocic. This will be an exciting match. Both men are strong wrestlers and have good stand-up, but Joners has a four-and-a-half reach advantage over the former champ.
Gane is going to have to go back and work on his grappling. Jones just made it look easy to take him down; in this sport, if your whole game is not evolving, then you will get made to look like a fool. Jones is on another level wrestling-wise, but Gane should have learnt from the Francis Ngannou fight. He did say that he only trains when a fight is announced; maybe this loss will be the kick in the backside that will get him to work on his weaknesses outside of a fight announcement.
Speaking of the Ngannou above, with Dana White’s comments about the former Champion, we will never see the former Heavyweight King grace the Octagon again. His absence will shadow the Heavyweight division for years to come.
