Spotify layoffs see The Ringer impacted

Spotify recently announced layoffs in its podcast group, resulting in staff being let go from The Ringer and Spotify Studios.

According to both Variety and Awful Announcing, 15 staff members have been affected, with The Ringer’s staff writer Miles Surrey and Special Projects Lead Andrew Gruttadaro both taking to Twitter and X to announce their departures from the company.

Former Ringer writer and Podcaster Shea Serrano paid tribute to Gruttadaro on a post on Twitter/X.

Staff cuts were not the only part of the announcement this week; two podcasts were also axed from The Ringer’s Podcast network.

The Full Go, a podcast about Chicago sports and sports culture hosted by Jason Goff, and New York, New York, hosted by John ‘JJ’ Jastremski, are ending. Having been a Ringer fan and avid listener of both podcasts, it hit me right in the feels hearing this news. Both Goff and Jastremski brought not only their knowledge of sport to their cities but also their unique ways of hosting each show.

Goff seems to be moving away from The Ringer; he hosts The Athletic Show (a show launched by sports news outlet The Athletic and Amazon), and Jastremski is most likely to stay at the company. He is still a co-host of The Ringer Gambling show. The New York, though, may not have trouble finding a job if need be; he is a regular on SNY TV.

Despite being an Aussie, I am obsessed with the Big Apple and all things New York sports. It is through listening to Jastremski that I got the idea to start looking at both the New York Yankees and the New York Giants for a column I will be calling ‘Empire State of Play’, which is New York sports through an Australian lens.

To keep up with all the latest media news in America, Awful Announcing is the go-to site. They cover all the major sports and so much more.
